EastLink's southbound carriageway forms the majority of the Bike course for IRONMAN Asia Pacific Championship Melbourne.
EastLink's southbound (outbound) carriageway (including the Mullum Mullum tunnel) will be closed on Sunday 23 March from 4:30am until 7pm. EastLink's northbound carriageway will remain open and will not be affected.
If planning to travel south on this day you may use Springvale Rd and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to Peninsula Link. When travelling eastbound on the Eastern Fwy you can use the Middleborough Rd or Blackburn Rd exits to avoid any delays at the Springvale Rd exit.
Please visit ironmanmelbourne.com for details about other road closures, or phone IRONMAN on 1300 835 411. detailed map of traffic changes
Great IRONMAN spectator locations on Sunday 23 March:
- Frankston Waterfront at dawn. Get there by 7am to see the athletes ‘get in the zone’ then get in the water for the 3.8km swim at Frankston Pier. The pro athletes will start first, at around 7:20am, and it won’t be long until the they have finished the swim and are running up the beach to the huge bike transition area.
- Frankston Playne Street throughout the morning and afternoon (a short 5-10 minute walk from the Waterfront) will be a good spot to see the athletes get going on the 180km bike leg, and it’s also the southern bike course turn around point. So each athlete will cycle Playne Street on three separate occasions during the day before hopping off their bikes down by the Waterfront again and running on to St Kilda.
- St Kilda’s Catani Gardens (3pm - midnight) is the location of the IRONMAN finish line, at the end of the 42.2km run (Marathon distance). The first finisher is expected at approximately 3:20pm, and the last around midnight. There will be a public grandstand to see the drama unfold at the finish chute, food/drink vendors, and visit the IRONMAN Expo with the IRONMAN shop and other fitness retailers.
