Box Hill Hawks win by 100 points
Box Hill Hawks retained the EastLink Cup with a resounding 100 point victory over Frankston Dolphins at the City Oval on Saturday 23 May.
Reigning Norm Smith Medallist Luke Hodge headlined the half-time entertainment as he and several of his Hawthorn FC teammates assisted with a handball competition for kids and the giveaway of EastLink footballs and frisbees.
In an ABC television interview with prominent VFL identity Phil Cleary at half-time, Luke Hodge thanked ConnectEast and EastLink for their contribution in providing free entry for the fans from Box Hill and Frankston.
Hawthorn FC premiership stars Xavier Ellis, Stuart Dew and Brendan Renouf dominated for Box Hill throughout the match in front of a home crowd of almost 1500.
The charity partner for the day was Life Education Australia, who provide positive, preventative drug and health education programs which motivate, encourage and empower young people to make smart life choices for a healthy future, free from the harms associated with drug misuse. Life Education is the largest non-government provider of drug and health education throughout Australia reaching 750,000 primary and secondary school students each year.
Healthy Harold was on hand to toss the coin at the start of the game and fans were asked to make a gold coin donation on entry to this worthy cause.
ConnectEast General Manager – Corporate Affairs James Tonkin presented the EastLink Cup to the Box Hill Hawks co-captains Steve Kenna and Lukas Markovic at the conclusion of the game.
This is the second year of the EastLink Cup and is staged as a result of a partnership agreement between AFL Victoria and ConnectEast. With Box Hill and Frankston located at either end of EastLink, fans from both teams are already benefitting from the travel time and fuel savings since EastLink opened.
The partnership also involves the EastLink Cup Primary Schools Competition, a knockout competition between 24 primary schools along the EastLink corridor. The 2009 competition begins in Keysborough on Thursday 28 May.
