EastLink CCTV: car travels wrong direction at speed

Monday 8 April 2019

VIDEO

This video is a reminder for motorists to always remain alert.

EastLink is Melbourne's safest freeway. Please help us keep it that way.

At 1:35pm on Wednesday 3 April, a car entered EastLink the wrong way up an exit ramp at Cheltenham Rd.

The car then traveled at speed in the wrong direction on EastLink for about 3km, exiting at Princes Hwy.

Luckily, there were no accidents as a result of this incident.

Although contra flow vehicles are rare, this incident is a reminder for motorists to always remain alert for the unexpected.

Some of the key safety messages relating to driving and unexpected incidents:

  • Maintain a safe braking distance from the vehicle in front. Adjust this according to driving conditions.
  • Remain alert at all times. The unexpected can happen, and when it does, it happens very fast.
  • Don't allow yourself to be distracted.

In an emergency, phone the emergency services on 000.

Now that Help Phones have been removed from EastLink, if you see a hazard on EastLink you can report it by phoning (03) 9955 1550 - that's the new number shown on the new road signs along EastLink, and it's only for reporting hazards. (Remember, never touch your phone while driving.)
