EastLink CCTV: contra flow motorbike detected

Wednesday 2 October 2019

VIDEO

At 3:35pm on Wednesday 2 October, a motorcyclist was travelling on EastLink between Springvale Rd and the Mullum Mullum tunnel entrance.

For some reason the motorcyclist decided not to go through the tunnel, and instead returned back to Springvale Rd in a highly dangerous contra flow manoeuvre.

The incident was detected by a nearby EastLink incident response team and the EastLink control room, from where the operators monitored the situation via CCTV in case there was an accident. Luckily, there was no accident in this instance.

Some of the key safety messages:

  • Stopping, U turns, reversing and contra flow manoeuvres are not allowed on EastLink and other freeways.
  • If a freeway exit is missed, motorists should travel on to the next exit.
  • Motorists must remain alert at all times. The unexpected can happen, and when it does, it happens very fast.
  • Don't allow yourself to be distracted.

In an emergency, phone the emergency services on 000.

Now that Help Phones have been removed from EastLink, if you see a hazard on EastLink you can report it by phoning (03) 9955 1550 - that's the number shown on the road signs along EastLink, and it's only for reporting hazards. (Remember, never touch your phone while driving.)
