EastLink tunnel pavement gets a deep clean

Friday 21 October 2022

The pavement surface inside the EastLink tunnels is dense grade asphalt.

This means the EastLink tunnels are not included in EastLink’s major resurfacing project, which started last summer and is focused on resurfacing EastLink’s extensive open grade asphalt surface.

To ensure the pavement in the EastLink tunnels continues to provide a high quality driving experience, we’ve washed the tunnel pavement surface with specialist equipment.

Heavy industrial cleaning trucks were brought down from Queensland to undertake a high pressure wash and clean of the tunnel pavement surface to remove any build-up of oils, grime, particles and other material.

To minimise inconvenience for motorists, these works were completed at night and with temporary lane closures and speed restrictions instead of full tunnel closures.

EastLink’s major resurfacing project set to restart soon

After more than one billion trips on EastLink, we’re resurfacing EastLink for a safer, smoother, quieter ride.

Last summer we completed the resurfacing of EastLink between Springvale Rd and Burwood Hwy (in both directions, excluding the tunnels) as well as Ringwood Bypass (west of Ringwood St).

This summer we will resurface EastLink between Burwood Hwy and Cheltenham Rd (in both directions).

Look out for updates - EastLink’s resurfacing project is expected to get underway again soon.
